Earlier in May, Dr. Higa was featured on the Azteca TV’s weekly program, Nuestra Hora con Lety (Our Hour with Lety), to discuss bariatric surgery and the options available to qualifying patients. Nuestra Hora con Letyis a popular local program that airs every Sunday at 9am to showcase local talent including top business leaders and professionals in and around Tucson.
In the interview above, Dr. Higa explains bariatric surgery and some of the decisions and questions that come with it – specifically discussing gastric sleeve surgery. Dr. Higa explains how gastric sleeve surgery entails taking out a large part of the patient’s stomach, removing some of the portion that controls appetite. After surgery, the patient’s stomach is about the size of a banana or a sleeve, hence the name. Patients can lose 65% or more of their excess body weight and change their lives and their health.
Dr. Higa informs the audience that surgical time ranges from an hour to an hour and a half and patients stay at the hospital overnight, usually returning home the following day. After two weeks, patients can return to work.
Over the next 6 or so months, the patient is seen regularly by a multi-disciplinary team including various specialists to help ensure the success of the procedure and offer support to the patient as they change their life and lifestyle.
